Metro Retail earnings jump on network expansion, store upgrades
Gaisano-led Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI) reported a 45-percent year-on-year increase in net income to ₱212.2 million for the first half of 2026, while second-quarter earnings for the year rose by 40.3 percent.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) last week, MRSGI said its strong profit growth was driven by sustained strategic network expansion, continuous store renovation, and sharper assortment curation.
“Our strong performance in the first half of 2026 demonstrates the effectiveness of our strategic growth initiatives and the resilience of our core business,” said MRSGI President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Joselito Orense.
First-half consolidated net sales grew 3.1 percent year-on-year to ₱19.36 billion, with comparative store sales up 0.2 percent. By category, food retail expanded by 3.8 percent, while general merchandise increased by 1.2 percent.
Gross profit improved year-on-year to 22.6 percent from 21.8 percent due to margin gains across both food retail and general merchandise through an improved sales mix between categories.
On the other hand, operating expenses (opex) were kept to a controlled 4.8-percent increase despite the ongoing Middle East conflict, reflecting inflationary overhead and costs from new store openings.
Driven by top-line gains and disciplined cost control, six-month operating income climbed 22.8 percent to ₱339.4 million.
“As we move into the second half of the year, we remain committed to bringing goods closer to communities, creating local jobs, and continuing operational efficiency to deliver sustained value to our customers and shareholders,” said Orense.
MRSGI continues to deepen its Visayas footprint with additional locations in Naval town, Biliran province, and Lapu-Lapu City and Mandaue City in Cebu province, reaching a total of 84 stores as of today.
Parallel to store expansion, MRSGI is actively elevating customer experience through renovations across stores and categories.
The company has started store upgrades at its big stores and hypermarkets. Just this July, MRSGI celebrated a milestone by relaunching its pioneer store, Metro Colon, modernizing the shopping experience while honoring the brand’s legacy in downtown Cebu.
To date, MRSGI operates a total of 84 branches across Luzon and Visayas under the formats Metro Supermarket, Metro Department Store, Super Metro Hypermarket, Metro Value Mart, and Metro Home Improvement and Lifestyle.
