Magalong warns Baguio City residents of soil erosion due to continuous rains
BAGUIO CITY -- Mayor Benjamin Magalong warned residents that the prolonged rain has left the soil highly saturated, increasing the risk of soil erosion and possible landslides in this city.
Magalong said the city has been experiencing nearly 17 days of continuous rainfall, with only brief periods of sunshine.
He urged residents, particularly those living along slopes, to inspect their surroundings for cracks or signs of soil movement and immediately report any hazards by calling 911.
He reported that the city has already significantly exceeded its historical rainfall average for August, with more than 1,490 millimeters recorded from August 1 to 10 alone, compared with the usual monthly average of around 963 millimeters.
He warned that the prolonged rain has left the soil highly saturated, increasing the risk of soil erosion and possible landslides.
Despite the situation, Magalong said there is no need to declare a state of calamity as the city still has sufficient funds to respond to the effects of the rains.
He also cited the assistance being provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), led by Secretary Rex Gatchalian, to affected residents in Guisad Surong.
Base on Weather Advisory, today, Aug 17 until Aug.19,heavy rains (Orange Rainfall) with 100-200 mm will experienced in the province of Benguet, including Baguio City.
