Heavy rains flood parts of Manila, stall traffic in low-lying areas
Intense to torrential rains triggered flooding in several parts of Manila on Monday, Aug. 17, with knee-deep waters reported in some low-lying areas and traffic brought to a standstill in parts of Sampaloc.
The Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MCDRRMO) raised a red alert as heavy rains continued to pour over the capital, warning of intense to torrential rainfall and possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
Traffic in Sampaloc, particularly along Maceda, Blumentritt, and España Boulevard, was severely affected as floodwaters rose.
Vehicles became stranded along portions of Dela Fuente Street, where the floodwater had become too deep for cars to pass, resulting in a traffic buildup.
Flooding was also reported along Dos Castillas Street, where water reached almost knee-deep levels.
Other low-lying areas, including portions of Taft Avenue, Quiapo, Mabini Street, and Tondo, were likewise affected by rising floodwaters.
The flooding came as several Metro Manila local governments suspended classes for Monday amid persistent rains brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat.
In Marikina, authorities reported a rapid rise in the Marikina River after rainfall reached 120 millimeters from 3 p.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Monday. The city also reported a spill rate of 368.57 cubic meters per second from Wawa Dam, with additional water flowing from Antipolo, Montalban, and other parts of Rizal.
Marikina later announced the suspension of classes at all levels, public and private, for Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Authorities urged motorists and residents in flood-prone areas to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor local advisories and take precautions as heavy rainfall continues.
