Former House deputy speaker Mikee Romero didn't take the "stolen valor" issue sitting down.
Romero, a Philippine Air Force (PAF) reservist with the rank of brigadier general, issued a statement Monday, April 17 wherein he pushed back on the allegations that he didn't deserve the conferment of his military awards as well as his honorary badges and insignia.
"Regarding my rank, appointments, and awards within the reserve force: every recognition and distinction awarded to me was conferred unsolicited by the respective service branches and commands based on official merit," he said.
"Lahat ng pagkilala at parangal ay kusang ibinigay batay sa aking paninilbihan. Kailanman ay hindi ko ito hiningi o ipinakiusap," underscored the former three-term 1-Pacman Party-list representative.
(All recognition and honors were freely given based on my service. I never asked for or requested them.)
According to Romero, all of his distinctions were backed by "official records".
"All relevant general orders and official documentations are part of the permanent records of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. I have never claimed any distinction that is not explicitly supported by these official records. I let the work, the official documents, and the service records speak for themselves."
Record of service
Romero further delved into his record of service with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), "both as a former legislator and as a general in the AFP Reserve Force".
"As a member of Congress, I co-authored the 2018 AFP Salary Standardization Measures to ensure fair compensation and welfare for our uniformed personnel. In 2021, as deputy speaker, I facilitated the acquisition of three C-130J aircraft for the [PAF], significantly enhancing national military, humanitarian, and disaster-response capabilities," he said.
Romero also claimed involvement in more than 60 voluntary engagements "focusing on Civil-Military Operations (CMO) and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR)".
"We have delivered food assistance, medical and dental services, educational support, and critical equipment to over 20,000 Filipinos. This includes securing medical equipment donations for the AFP and facilitating open-heart surgeries for 150 children," he said.
"It remains a profound privilege to serve alongside the officers, enlisted personnel, and reservists of the [AFP]" Romero further said.
