Four jail officers were honored for thwarting the smuggling of illegal drugs from visitors of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) finside several Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-supervised facilities.
BJMP spokesperson Supt. Jayrex Bustinera saidthe bureau bestowed the honor to Jail Officer 1 (JO1) Mark Lester Saladino, Senior Jail Officer 3 (SJO3) Ariel Morañon, JO1 Queenie Ann Mae Ponpon and JO1 Margel M. Villaro (Caraga) for exercising due diligence and smart disposition, averting the entry of the prohibited items in their respective jails.
Saladino was cited for preventing the attempt of a Manila City Jail Female Dormitory male visitor to smuggle 1.080 grams of shabu inside the facility.
At the Carigara District Jail in Leyte, Morañon and Ponpon caught a female visitor trying to sneak in tobacco leaves hidden in her undergarment inside the facility.
A newly committed PDL at the Butuan City Jail Male Dormitory tried to slip in around .4337 grams of shabu concealed in his waistband but this did not escape the eagle-eyes of Villaro.
“Simple lang ang kanilang ginawa, sinunod nila ang tamang pamamaraan, at hindi sila natakot gumawa ng tama kahit walang nakatingin. Iyan ang uri ng kahusayan na gustong makita ng ating pamunuan sa bawat isa sa atin, oras-oras, araw-araw (What they did was very simple, they adhered to standard protocols, showing no fear to do what is right even if no one was looking. That is the attribute that our leadership wants to see in everyone of us, every time, everyday),’’ BJMP chief Director Efren A. Nemeño emphasized.
Nemeño pointed out that the series confiscation of illegal drugs and contrabands is a testament to the jail guard’s effective training and preparedness in ensuring the protection of the BJMP’s facilities.
Simultaneous with the enhanced security measures, Nemeño lamented that the BJMP has also relentlessly pursued modernized measures in “humane safekeeping.’’
He assured that all PDLs under the care of the BJMP will be treated equally with absolutely no room for special treatment accorded to influential or high-profile inmates.
Nemeño warned the public that the full force of the law awaits anyone who tries to bring in illegal drugs and other similar merchandise inside the BJMP facilities.
“Ang mga hakbang na ito ay sumasalamin sa tapat na layunin ng ahensya na mapanatili ang kaayusan at mahigpit na seguridad (inside the jail facility), na siya namang susi tungo sa tuluy-tuloy at epektibong rehabilitasyon ng bawat PDL (These initiatives coincide with the agency’s loyal objective to maintain the orderly and strict security, that are key factors in the continuous and effective rehabilitation of every PDL),’’ Nemeño continued.
