More localities under state of calamity due to 'habagat,' cyclones; death toll increases to 23

The number of areas placed under a state of calamity has risen to 50 as the impact of the combined effects of the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) and tropical cyclones “Luis” and “Maymay” became more apparent, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) disclosed Sunday, Aug. 16.
Based on the latest disaster monitoring data of the OCD, Central Luzon (Region 3) and Calabarzon (Region 4A) have 24 areas each under a state of calamity while Ilocos (Region 2) has two areas under the same status.
The areas declared under a state of calamity in Central Luzon were Pampanga, with all 21 cities and municipalities under a province-wide state of calamity due to flooding and damage; and Calumpit, Hagonoy, and Bulakan in Bulacan province.
In Calabarzon, the entire province of Cavite covering 23 cities and municipalities were under a state of calamity, as well as Montalban town in Rizal province.
In Ilocos Region, the two areas under a state of calamity were Dagupan City and Santa Barbara town, both in Pangasinan.
The death toll also climbed to 23, with Benguet accounting for 15 deaths, Rizal and Batangas with three fatalities apiece, and one each in La Union and Quezon Province.
The disaster has also left 17 people injured and three missing individuals.
The widespread impact of the weather disturbance has now affected 1,410,800 families or 4,903,086 individuals across Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), National Capital Region (NCR), Calabarzon (Region 4A), Mimaropa (Region 4B), Bicol (Region 5), Western Visayas (Region 6), and Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9).
Of this, there were 9,101 families or 31,456 individuals temporarily sheltering in 407 evacuation centers.
The latest assessment also recorded damage to 1,845 houses, of which, 1,667 were partially damaged while 178 were totally destroyed.
Infrastructure losses have reached P3.360 billion while damage to agriculture was estimated at P689.66 million, making the losses to more than P4.05 billion.
The government has so far provided P654.59 million worth of assistance to affected communities.
