The Philippine Navy (PN) is set to take part in a multilateral maritime exercise with India and regional partners from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in September as participating navies finalize preparations for the activity, it was announced on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise 2026 (AIME 2026) will be held from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, with India and the Philippines serving as designated hosts. The exercise will bring together the navies from the two countries as well as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, and Brunei.
The exercise, which will carry the theme “Anchored in Trust, United at Sea,” aims to improve regional maritime security and stability while strengthening partnerships and cooperation among participating navies, and provide an opportunity to improve their ability to work together during maritime operations.
Final preparations were synchronized during the AIME 2026 Final Planning Conference held from Aug. 10 to 12 in Pasay City, according to the Naval Defense Command.
The conference was co-presided over by Commodore Lued Lawan Lincuna, commander of the Naval Defense Command, on behalf of Philippine Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Q. Ezpeleta, and Commodore Amaninder Singh Sangha of the Indian Navy.
They were joined by Capt. Marissa Arlene A. Martinez, director of the Fleet-Marine Warfare Center, members of the PN planning team, and working group leads and planners from the participating navies.
Lincuna said the activity was significant as the participating countries share a maritime environment where the sea serves as a link between peoples and economies.
“As maritime nations, we recognize the sea as a vital link that connects peoples, facilitates economic activity, and contributes to collective security,” Lincuna said.
He said the maritime security environment was becoming more complex which requires countries to work together against traditional and nontraditional security concerns.
“From safeguarding vital sea lines of communication to responding to emerging maritime security concerns, collective effectiveness depends on the ability of nations to cooperate, communicate, and operate together with confidence and professionalism,” Lincuna said.
Meanwhile, Sangha underscored the longstanding relationship between India and the ASEAN countries, citing their historical ties as a foundation for closer cooperation in the maritime domain.
“Challenges in the maritime domain are evolving, and thus a collective resolve is a must in order to maintain a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region,” Sangha said.
