Bacolod scales down Rum Festival amid sugar crisis due to RSSI

BACOLOD CITY - This highly-urbanized city has opted for a simple celebration of this year’s Rum Festival on Saturday, August 15, while the sugar industry is battling Red-Striped Soft Scale Insect (RSSI) infestation.
Mayor Greg Gasataya said the city government decided to scale down the festivities amid the calamity caused by the infestation, prioritizing assistance for sugar owners and sugar farmers.
Gasataya said that different companies that had earlier pledged funding for the festival agreed to redirect their resources toward corporate social responsibility projects benefiting sugar farmers and landowners.
“We all agreed, and that’s the right direction to make,” he added.
The main ingredient of rum is sugarcane, a main product of Negros Occidental.
Despite the one-day celebration, the city could not completely cancel the festival because it is mandated by an ordinance authored by Councilor Em Ang, declaring the third week of August as Rum Festival Week in this city.
The city recently declared a state of calamity after RSSI infestation affected about 2,000 hectares, or 65.45 percent, of its 3,056 hectares of planted sugarcane.
Validation of around 3,000 affected sugar farmers and landowners is ongoing as the government prepares to release cash assistance.
An initial list has already been submitted to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), according to Gasataya.
Now on its sixth edition, the Rum Festival celebrates Bacolod’s deep connection to the sugar industry and rum heritage while highlighting the city’s creativity and hospitality.
The celebration opened at SM City Bacolod North Block on Saturday, with a Flair Bartending Competition, where participants showcased their creativity, precision, and skills behind the bar. Festival-goers also enjoyed free samples of selected rum products.
First launched in 2019, the Rum Festival has become one of Bacolod’s signature events, reflecting the city’s blend of rich heritage, modern creativity, and vibrant celebration.
