Damage to infrastructure and agriculture from the combined effects of the southwest monsoon (habagat) and tropical cyclones “Luis” and “Maymay” has reached more than P4 billion as at least 82 flood control projects were either partially affected or totally destroyed across the country, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The OCD said the combined losses reached P4,019,700,000 as damage to infrastructure was placed at P3.33 billion while agricultural damage stood at P689.7 million.
The latest figures showed the heavier financial toll was on public infrastructure, including flood control projects, bridges, schools, and road networks damaged by flooding, landslides, and other weather-related incidents.
Most of the damaged flood control projects were recorded in Ilocos (Region 1) with 64 infrastructure projects affected: 25 in Ilocos Sur, 17 in Ilocos Norte – the bailiwick of President Marcos Jr., 17 in La Union, and five in Pangasinan.
Fifteen projects were also affected in Calabarzon (Region 4A): nine in Batangas and six in Rizal.Three projects were also hit in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) – all in Abra.
The issue on flood control has been controversial after President Marcos Jr. exposed alleged corruption in their dealings with government agencies and local government units.
The death toll due to the weather disturbances also rose to 22, with 17 injured and three missing individuals.
Moreover, the OCD said about 1.4 million families or 4.8 million individuals were affected across 10 regions – Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), National Capital Region (NCR), Calabarzon (Region 4A), Mimaropa (Region 4B), Bicol (Region 5), Western Visayas (Region 6), and Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9).
Of those affected, there were about 14,600 families or 44,700 people temporarily residing in 395 evacuation centers.
The OCD said P592.5 million worth of aid had been provided to the affected communities.
