150 OFWs from Middle East return to Cagayan Valley amid conflict

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan — Around 150 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Middle East have been able to return to Cagayan Valley amid the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which has also affected several Gulf countries.
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 2 Director Virsie Tamayao said the returning OFWs were immediately given financial assistance for food and transportation expenses.
Many have decided not to return abroad due to security concerns and were provided livelihood assistance to help them establish businesses in the Philippines.
Tamayao said OWWA personnel have been deployed almost daily, including weekends, at the Tuguegarao and Cauayan airports to assist returning distressed OFWs, particularly those who are sick or have disabilities.
Active OWWA members may receive up to P30,000 in immediate financial assistance and P20,000 in medical assistance for treatment lasting up to six months. Those capable of working may also receive up to P20,000 in livelihood assistance.
OWWA coordinates with the Department of Trade and Industry for business training, consultations and monitoring of livelihood beneficiaries.
Tamayao said OWWA also assists OFWs facing abuse, unfair treatment, job loss and other difficulties arising from conflicts and unrest abroad through its e-CARES system and coordination with Migrant Workers Offices.
Meanwhile, around 3,000 beneficiaries in Cagayan Valley are expected to be selected for the OFW Dependents Scholarship Program for school year 2026–2027 from the 10,000 slots nationwide.
Tamayao said 24 new scholars qualified under the Educational Development Scholarship Program this year, while 15 OWWA scholars in the region graduated with Latin honors.
