The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday, Aug. 14, directed police commanders nationwide to tighten compliance with waste segregation and disposal rules as the government stepped up efforts to address the country’s growing garbage problem.
Police Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., PNP chief, said police personnel should set an example in maintaining clean workplaces and communities, stressing that proper waste disposal should start within police offices and units.
“As law enforcers, police personnel are expected to set good examples to the people we serve, and in this particular case, the proper waste management and segregation,” Nartatez said.
The PNP said the directive covers police offices and units down to precincts, police stations, and municipal and city stations. Commanders were told to ensure the use of separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
The PNP said the move supports President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla’s call for stronger measures on waste management in communities.
Marcos recently described the country as appearing to face a critical garbage situation during an inspection of a cleanup operation of accumulated trash along the reclaimed portion of Manila Bay in front of Baclaran Church on Aug. 12.
The garbage problem has prompted calls for more decisive action and closer coordination among government agencies. Authorities have also pushed for more systematic waste disposal measures that reach communities and encourage residents to observe proper waste management.
For his part, Nartatez said the PNP would assist local government units in implementing waste disposal regulations, particularly local ordinances.
“We, in the PNP, are ready to provide assistance to the local government units in enforcing ordinances regarding waste disposal,” he said.
Police personnel will also continue to take part in local efforts to keep public areas clean, according to Nartatez. He said the PNP supports the government’s campaign to improve waste disposal practices and maintain cleanliness in communities.
