'Napuno at napika': Renee Co goes off on never-ending floods

Fed up with the floods caused by the Habagat-strengthened rains, Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co went off on the government on Friday, Aug. 14 as she sought genuine solutions to the flood control corruption issue.
In particular, Co complained of the widespread flooding caused by the unyielding torrential rain in the past few days.
"Hindi na nga nasolusyunan ang isyu sa flood control corruption, hindi pa rin masolusyunan ang malubhang pagbaha sa mga komunidad at ang malalang epekto nito sa taumbayan," said the Makabayan bloc member.
(The issue of flood control corruption has not been solved, nor has the severe flooding in communities and its grave impact on the people.)
The youth representative's sarcasm overflowed as she cited the sorry state of flood-hit Filipinos.
"Hanggang kailan magdurusa ang taumbayan? Habang lumalangoy ang karaniwang tao sa tubig-baha, lumalangoy sa perang kinupit ang mga kurakot na hanggang ngayon ay hindi napapanagot. Sasabihan pang at least hanggang tuhod na lang daw ang baha," Co stressed.
(Until when will the people suffer? While ordinary citizens swim in floodwaters, the corrupt swim in stolen money and remain unaccountable. They even say at least the flood only reaches the knees.)
"Ang bilis magpabango, ngunit ang bagal umaksyon. Hindi naman tunay na nakikinabang ang taumbayan sa mga huwad nilang proyekto at lalong hindi nakakain ang mga pangakong hindi naman tinutupad," the militant solon said without mentioning anybody in particular.
(How quick they are to polish their image, yet so slow to act. The people do not truly benefit from their fake projects, and promises that are never fulfilled aren't sustenance either.)
Members of Congress bore the brunt of the flood control mess after many of them were implicated in payoffs from anomalous flood control projects.
Co called on the Filipino youth to work together in times of crisis, as she said mere resilience won't cut it this time.
"Hindi simpleng 'resilience' ang makakasagot sa pagdurusa ng taumbayan. Sama-sama tayong magtulungan para makaahin at sama-samang singilin ang mga korap sa pagkurakot nila sa kinabukasan natin," she said.
(It is not simple ‘resilience’ that will answer the people’s suffering. We must work together to rise and collectively hold the corrupt accountable for stealing our future.)
