"Like brother, like sister."
This was Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon's jab to impeachment trial respondent Vice President Sara Duterte after she reportedly appeared at her brother Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte's court proceeding on a grave threats case.
Ridon, in a press conference Friday, Aug. 14 highlighted that the Vice President herself was also in trouble for grave threats, specifically against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
In fact, the lady official's infamous grave threats against the members of the First Family formed one of the four articles of impeachment against her.
'It’s interesting na may kinakaharap pong grave threats issue ang Pangalawang Pangulo at may kinakaharap din pong grave threats issue ang kanya pong kapatid. So parang like brother, like sister po ito,” said Ridon, one of the solon-prosecutors in the Senate impeachment trial.
(It’s interesting that the Vice President is facing a grave threats issue, and her sibling is also facing a grave threats issue. So it’s like brother, like sister.)
“And the question to them is, and the question of the nation is, does it actually run in the family?” the outspoken congressman added.
Earlier, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a complaint for three counts of grave threats against Vice President Duterte at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) in relation to her grave threats allegation in the articles of impeachment.
Reports said the Vice President accompanied her brother, Rep. Duterte, during his August 13 arraignment at the Davao City Regional Trial Court Branch (RTC) No. 52 over a grave threats case filed by a businessman.
Ridon also questioned what he described as the Vice President’s selective attendance at proceedings involving her family and her own cases.
“Of course, the proceedings of her brother matter, kasi syempre kapatid niya po yun (because of course that's her brother). The more important proceeding for her would be her own grave threats proceeding at the Senate Impeachment Court,” he said.
The prosecutor clarified that while Vice President wasn't legally required to attend the impeachment proceedings, her appearance would allow her to directly confront the accusations being raised against her.
“The truth is, kung meron po siyang righteous indignation dito po sa proceedings na ginaganap po laban sa kanya, she should be there to look at the prosecutors in the eye na mga sinungaling kayong lahat. Walang batayan yung kaso ninyo,” he added.
(The truth is, if she has righteous indignation about the proceedings being held against her, she should be there to look the prosecutors in the eye and say, ‘You are all liars. Your case has no basis.)
Ridon cited the late former Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona’s decision to personally attend his impeachment trial in 2012. Although he was eventually convictedm he showed his willingness to confront the proceedings.
Vice President Duterte's conviction via impeachment trial is being sought over her offices' alleged misuse of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds; untruthful declarations in the filing of her statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth; unexplained wealth; and her death threats to members of the First Family.
