Rubiano: Regular inspections key to flood-control readiness

Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano said regular inspections and clearing operations are essential in ensuring that pumping stations and drainage systems remain ready to perform when they are most needed.
Her statement came as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conducted an on-site inspection of the Diokno Pumping Station in Pasay City on Aug. 12, underscoring the importance of personally checking flood-control facilities as government agencies intensify measures to protect communities from flooding.
Marcos, accompanied by Calixto-Rubiano, checked ongoing clearing and waste collection operations at the facility, assessing its condition and the progress of efforts to remove garbage and debris.
The inspection allowed the President and local officials to evaluate the situation on the ground and determine whether drainage and pumping facilities are being properly maintained and kept free of obstructions that could hamper operations during heavy rains.
Calixto-Rubiano said the city government continues to coordinate with national agencies to ensure flood-control infrastructure is maintained and that problems affecting the flow of floodwater are promptly addressed.
The visit also gave national and local officials the chance to review clearing activities and identify areas requiring sustained attention.
Joining Marcos and Calixto-Rubiano were Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Don Artes, and Energy Secretary Sharon Garin.
Their presence emphasized the need for coordinated monitoring of flood-control facilities and swift action when problems arise.
Calixto-Rubiano stressed that flood-control efforts should not end with the construction or installation of infrastructure but must include continuous inspection, maintenance, clearing, and proper waste management.
