P1.7-M worth of smuggled cigarettes seized in Batangas

CAMP MIGUEL MALVAR, Batangas City- Police confiscated P1.7 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested a trader during a buy-bust operation on Wednesday night, Aug. 12, in Barangay Poblacion 1, Calaca City, this province.
The suspect was identified as MK, 33, a store merchandise owner and resident of the said place.
Investigation showed that the suspect was arrested after accepting the marked buy-bust money from a police poseur-buyer in exchange for illicit cigarettes during the operation conducted by joint operatives of the 1st Provincial Intelligence Team–Provincial Intelligence Unit (1st PIT-PIU), BPPO, together with the Calaca Component City Police Station, RID4A, and RSOU, for alleged violations of Section 118(c) of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), and Sections 144, 262, and 263 of Republic Act No. 8424, or the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC).
Thirty master cases of various brands of cigarettes with a total value of P1,719,000, a multi-purpose van with license plate no. DAV 1936, and marked money were recovered.
Alias MK has been placed under the custody of the Batangas Police Provincial Office while appropriate charges were being prepared.
The Batangas PPO said it remains firm in its fight against the illicit cigarette trade and continues to protect legitimate businesses, safeguard government revenues, and support the province’s drive for economic security.
Col. Oliver Ebora, Batangas police director, said, “We will continue working with our partner units and intensify operations to protect lawful commerce and hold accountable those who choose to profit from illegal activities."
He added that the Batangas PPO remains firm in its fight against the illicit cigarette trade to protect legitimate businesses, safeguard government revenues, and support the province’s drive towards economic security.
