The Philippine U-20 men’s saber team stunned powerhouse Thailand, 45-40, to capture the elusive gold medal in the Southeast Asian Fencing Federation (SEAFF) Juniors Fencing Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Khiane Nash Felipe, a standout from University of the East, got the Filipinos to a strong start with a 5-2 victory in the opening bout, before Drake Anthony Chung extended the lead to 10-4.
Vito Misael Coching rode on the momentum to give it 15-8 for the Nationals after three bouts, before the Nationals held on their ground against the persistent attempts from the Thais, with Felipe sealing the win.
Other member of the team is Matthew General.
