For fans who have been waiting years to return to Genovia, “The Princess Diaries 3” is suddenly feeling a little less magical.

Julie Andrews has confirmed that she will not be returning as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the much-awaited sequel, meaning the royal reunion many fans had quietly hoped for will not happen.

Andrews, 90, played the beloved Queen Clarisse in the first two “Princess Diaries” movies, becoming one of the most memorable parts of Mia Thermopolis’ journey from an awkward teenager to the future Queen of Genovia.

Now, with Anne Hathaway returning as Mia, Andrews has decided to leave Clarisse’s story behind.

“I’m not going to be in it,” Andrews told Today.com.

In a separate interview with InStyle, the actress explained that she feels she has moved on from that kind of on-screen work. She said the creative team had approached her about the film, but ultimately, she felt the time had come to say no.

That decision was not an easy one.

Andrews admitted that it was “very, very hard to say ‘no’” to the opportunity, especially because of how much the franchise means to her. But she also believes the new movie can move forward without her.

For fans, however, it is difficult not to feel a little heartbroken.

Queen Clarisse was more than just the grandmother who revealed Mia’s royal identity. She was the elegant, sometimes intimidating, but ultimately loving presence who helped Mia find confidence and understand what it meant to become a princess.

Andrews and Hathaway also shared a special chemistry that helped make the first two films so enduring.

The third movie will instead continue Mia’s story, with Hathaway returning to the role that helped make her a star. “Crazy Rich Asians” filmmaker Adele Lim is directing the new installment.

The film has already gone through changes behind the scenes, with Hathaway previously revealing that the team had started over with a new direction for the story.
