Delos Santos sweeps 3 golds, breaks world standard marks in Asian tilt

It seems Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz need not worry about the future of Philippine weightlifting, with the country’s emerging lifters continuing to make their mark at the ongoing Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Albert Ian Delos Santos was the latest lifter to shine at the regional tournament, sweeping three gold medals in record-breaking fashion on Tuesday, Aug. 12, to add more gold in the team’s medal haul.
Delos Santos, a 19-year-old Zamboanga City native, dominated the junior men’s 70 kg division with a total lift of 321 kgs, surpassing the world standard of 318 kg.
He left the field far behind, finishing 22 kg ahead of Iran’s Mehrab Davasari, who settled for silver with a 299 kg total.
Delos Santos made his presence felt from the start, topping the snatch with a 141 kg lift before raising the bar in the clean and jerk, where he shattered the 179 kg world standard by hoisting 180 kg.
It wasn’t the first time that Delos Santos is breaking records. Last May, he reset the world junior record in the clean and jerk at the 2026 IWF World Junior Weightlifting Championships in Egypt by lifting 187 kg, but on a different weight class at men’s 71 kg.
In that tournament, he won two gold medals.
Meanwhile, Davasari placed fourth in the snatch with 134 kg and second in the clean and jerk with 165 kg to secure the silver medal in total.
India’s Yash Vinod Khandagale, who finished silver behind Delos Santos in the world junior tournament, took the bronze with a 298 kg total, highlighted by a silver in the snatch (140 kg) and fourth-place finish in the clean and jerk (158 kg).
Delos Santos’ feat improved Team PH’s medal tally in the juniors division to six gold, three silver and six bronze medals, apart from collecting 10 gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the youth class in the first five days of competition.
Producing medals for Team PH in the previous days were Rosalinda Faustino, Jhodie Peralta, Jerick Icon Castro, Kirby Kent Alas-as, Prince Kiel Delos Santos, Alexsandra Ann Diaz, Angeline Colonia, Althea Bacaro and Jay-R Colonia.
