Ateneo reviewing DOLE's decision on Tab Baldwin's work permit violations

The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) said it is now reviewing the decision of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in connection with the investigation on the employment of Thomas Anthony “Tab” Baldwin as the head coach of the school’s basketball team.
On Tuesday, DOLE announced that it found both Baldwin and ADMU liable for violating the rules and regulations in hiring foreign workers, particularly in securing Alien Employment Permit (AEP) and Certificate of Exemption (COE).
Both Baldwin and the ADMU were fined P4.9 million—the amount was based on the P10,000 per day fine for 490 days, or from Feb. 10 last year until Baldwin’s resignation on June 15 this year.
In a statement, the ADMU said it has already received the copy of the DOLE’s decision.
“The University is currently reviewing the Order with its legal team and studying the remedies available to it under the law,” the statement read.
“Ateneo will take the appropriate next steps after its review,” it added.
DOLE initiated the investigation after the death of college basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during an off-campus training in Aurora in June this year.
