True crime is having a moment, and Stephanie Soo is taking it to Netflix

True crime has become a familiar part of the local podcast and streaming landscape, with Filipino audiences tuning in to stories about real-life crimes, mysteries and cases that continue to spark discussion.

That audience includes fans of Stephanie Soo, whose "Rotten Mango" podcast has built a strong following around these parts.

Note the show currently sits at No. 4 on Apple Podcasts' overall chart for the country.

Now, Soo is taking her brand of true crime storytelling to Netflix.

The creator behind "Rotten Mango" is set to headline "The Rotten Files with Stephanie Soo," a new Netflix original true-crime podcast that will have her looking into some of the most talked-about and disturbing cases making headlines.

The project gives Soo a new platform after years of building an audience online.

The appeal of "Rotten Mango" has largely been Soo's willingness to spend time on the details of a case. Her episodes often go beyond simply recounting what happened, digging into the people involved, the circumstances surrounding the crime and the psychology behind it.

"The Rotten Files" brings her back to the genre that made "Rotten Mango" a hit.

"Netflix is putting meaningful creative power in the hands of content creators, which is a really rare opportunity," Soo said. "We’re ready to hit the ground running."

"The Rotten Files with Stephanie Soo" is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on Aug. 14.
