ZAMBOANGA CITY- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Mindanao grid under yellow alert status on Tuesday, August 11 after its operating margin failed to provide sufficient power to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirements.
The grid was placed on yellow alert status from 10am to 8pm.
Available capacity for Mindanao was placed at 2,696megawatts while peak demand is at 2,616 megawatts.
Nine plants are reportedly on forced outage for the month of August. Nine plants are running on derated capacities for a total of 777.7 megawatts unavailable to the grid.
Among the factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration are the emergency shutdown of GNPK (GNPower Kauswagan Ltd Co) 1 due to a boiler tube leak last August 9 and maintenance activities for GNPK 2.
Other factors are a decrease in the Pulangi hydroelectric power plant’s capacity by 40 megawatts and an increased forecasted demand at 5pm by 94megawatts.
