Senate cancels impeachment trial, plenary session due to heavy rains

The Senate on Monday, Aug. 10, cancelled its impeachment trial and plenary session and allowed its officials and employees to work from home amid projected heavy rainfall brought by the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat.

In an advisory, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. said Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian approved the work-from-home arrangement in view of Memorandum Circular No. 123 issued by the Office of the President on Sunday and the forecast of heavy rains.
“The impeachment trial and plenary session of the Senate today are cancelled and shall resume tomorrow, Tuesday, 11 August 2026,” the advisory said.
Malacañang earlier ordered work-from-home arrangements in government offices in Metro Manila and 15 provinces on Monday due to continued heavy rainfall from the Southwest Monsoon.
The directive covers the National Capital Region, as well as Ilocos Sur, La Union, Zambales, Bataan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Benguet, Pangasinan, Abra, Tarlac, Pampanga, Oriental Mindoro, and Bulacan.
Under Memorandum Circular No. 123, alternative learning modes for classes at all levels in public and private schools will also be implemented in the affected areas, unless otherwise directed by local chief executives.
The Senate is currently hearing the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. The trial will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
