'Kuliglig' becomes widespread alternative transport in flooded areas in Pangasinan

CALASIAO, Pangasinan — Farm machinery, locally known as “kuliglig”, has become an alternative mode of transportation in some flood-affected areas here.
The type of vehicles is currently being used to transport residents through flooded roads.

" Marami na sa jeep o traysikel ayaw na magsakay sa amin kapag ganyan na baha at lampas tuhod na (Many of the jeepneys and tricycles refuse to take passengers whenever the floodwater reaches beyond knee-high)", a commuter said.
The minimum fare for the kuliglig rides is reportedly ₱20 per passenger.
The situation reflects how residents are adapting to difficult travel conditions as floodwaters affect mobility in low-lying communities.
Residents here are advised to exercise caution when using flooded roads, particularly in areas where water levels are deep.
Meanwhile, kuliglig operators, many of them farmers, are also benefiting from the increased demand for transport amid the flooding.
Some farmers reportedly earn thousands of pesos in a day by using their farm machinery to ferry passengers through flood-affected roads.
The kuliglig has become a practical lifeline for residents—and an unexpected livelihood opportunity for farmers during the flooding.
