ILOILO CITY—Tributes poured for Mary Egida Rivera, the actress who played Ned’s lola (grandmother) in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, in her native Iloilo.

“You’re an inspiration to all Filipinos. May you rest in eternal peace, Lola!” said Iloilo City Rep. Julienne “Jam-Jam” Baronda.

It was only last August 3 when TMZ reported the death of the 82-year-old Rivera, who passed away in Hawaii last April 15.

Rivera was a pure Ilongga. She was born in Iloilo in 1943 to Vicente and Felicia Egida. She earned her college degree at University of San Agustin (USA) in 1964.

She would marry pastor Alejandro Rivera and later move to Hawaii.

When the news of her death became public, Ilonggos shared online photos with Rivera when she visited Iloilo in 2023.

“She will remain an icon in the movie franchise,” wrote Nico Gumban, a former radio DJ and a vlogger.

Nereo Lujan shared photos of the actress visiting his office to help in the research about her father Vicente, a World War II veteran from the town of Igbaras.

A non-professional actor, Rivera only appeared in one scene in the 2021 blockbuster film as the grandmother of Ned, played by Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon.

The Hollywood Reporter noted the scene with Rivera “has become iconic”. It was when Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland—the three actors who portrayed Spider-Man in different movies—made an appearance.
