Filipinos have always had a soft spot for love songs, tunes about falling in love, getting hurt, missing someone, or simply finding comfort in another person.

It is familiar territory for many musicians. But how do you make a love song feel fresh?

For SunKissed Lola, the answer is to keep it simple.

Instead of grand declarations or sweeping heartbreak, the band looks at something more ordinary: the little fights, tampuhan, stubborn moments, and the inevitable making up that come with being in love.

That is the idea behind “Edi Magalit Ka,” the band’s new single. It is still very much a love song, but this time, SunKissed Lola takes a lighter and more playful approach.

“It’s a song about relationships,” vocalist Laura Lacbain says. “Hindi maiiwasan ang away sa relationship, pero hindi pa rin mawawala ang love. Susuyuin pa rin sa huli.”

Vocalist and guitarist Alvin “Bino” Serito calls it a “loving anthem,” built around the idea that even when couples get upset with each other, the love does not simply disappear.

“Even if you’re mad with your special someone, at the end of the day, they’re still your favorite person to come home to,” he says.

The song actually began in 2021, but the original version was more prideful. As the band worked on it, the lyrics became softer and more open.

“No one has to win,” Bino says. “I will always choose the relationship over the argument.”

Even the title plays with that idea.

“The title was intriguing in itself,” Laura says. “You will be curious. Pwedeng i-send sa jowa. You really need to listen to the song to understand the context.”

The same simplicity carries into the music.

What started as an acoustic piece eventually became a warm, laid-back arrangement. The band kept things straightforward, allowing the lyrics to take the lead.

“We all united to make it sound laid-back, simple, and we wanted to highlight the lyrics of the song,” bassist Danj Quimson says.

“For this one, we made it simple for the audience,” Bino adds. “We made it magaan sa tainga.”

SunKissed Lola is still singing about love. This time, though, they are not looking at the big romantic moments. They are looking at the arguments, the tampuhan, and the moments when two people have to decide whether to hold on to their pride or fix things.

Sometimes, that is where the real love story is.
