More than 850 individuals from 243 families have been displaced across Manila as days of continuous rain from the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) forced residents in low-lying and riverside communities to evacuate and seek safer ground as of Monday morning, August 10.

Data from the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) showed that evacuation centers across several districts have begun to fill up, with the largest concentration recorded in Barangay 101 in the city’s first district.

In San Andres, near the flood-prone stretch of Tripa de Galina, 35 families or 155 individuals from Barangays 738 and 800 were brought to safety at the District Welfare Office V after water levels in their communities became difficult to manage.

Coastal communities were also affected, with the Baseco Evacuation Center housing 54 families or 211 individuals, as tides and runoff from continuous rains contributed to rising water levels in the area.

In Sta. Mesa, four families or 18 individuals from Barangay 598, an area near the San Juan River known for frequent flooding, are temporarily staying at Likha Court after preemptive evacuation measures were implemented.

Manila City Social Welfare Officer Jay R. Dela Fuente said the city has been providing round-the-clock assistance to evacuees, including hot meals such as champorado, arroz caldo, and noodles, along with ready-to-eat food packs, drinking water, and hygiene supplies.

Local officials noted that while some areas experienced gradual flooding rather than sudden surges, the prolonged nature of the rainfall since the weekend has led to accumulation in drainage systems and waterways, prompting early evacuations in vulnerable communities.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels, coastal conditions, and interior barangays as rains persist, with more families expected to move to evacuation centers if weather conditions do not improve.
