The future of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) took center stage as the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP) celebrated Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino with its biggest Songwriters' Night Select yet. Held on July 31 at the Music Museum, the annual concert attracted more than 1,000 registrants, making it the largest edition of the event to date.

More than a concert, Songwriters' Night Select has become FILSCAP's flagship platform for discovering, developing, and celebrating the country's next generation of songwriters. This year's event brought together music lovers, industry partners, and supporters to witness 15 emerging songwriters from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao perform their original compositions on one of the country's premier concert stages.

FILSCAP Chairman Ramon Chuaying shared that “Music has always been a powerful way of bringing people together,” and that this year’s FILSCAP Songwriters’ Night Select was a reminder of the stories, cultures, and experiences that shape Filipino artistry. He added that OPM continues to grow through the creativity and unique perspectives of today’s artists, with FILSCAP remaining committed to celebrating regional diversity and nurturing individual artistry.

The evening formally opened with inspiring remarks from Jim Paredes, who reflected on the remarkable journey of this year's performers. He shared that the 15 featured songwriters were carefully selected from more than 300 aspiring composers who joined FILSCAP's nationwide Songwriters' Night Open Mic Series. Representing different regions of the country, the finalists showcased the richness, diversity, and promise of Filipino songwriting. Paredes emphasized that Songwriters' Night Select is one of FILSCAP's most important initiatives in championing original Filipino music by giving emerging creators the opportunity to be heard, recognized, and celebrated.

That support extended well beyond the concert stage. From the time the finalists were selected, FILSCAP provided the resources and assistance needed to help them prepare for the event, allowing them to focus on their performances and their music. The initiative reflects the organization's continued commitment to supporting Filipino songwriters by creating opportunities for emerging creators to develop their craft and share their work with a wider audience.

The celebration was made even more meaningful by the presence of FILSCAP's Board of Trustees, whose vision and initiative continue to guide the growth of Songwriters' Night Select. Their commitment to expanding the program has strengthened FILSCAP's efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for emerging songwriters while steadily building the event into the country's biggest celebration of Filipino songwriting.

Throughout the evening, audiences were treated to heartfelt performances from Roli Manalo (Nakak (Gigil)), Eric Diao (Di Na Bale), Jeffrey Umol (Engkanto), Ivee Madamba (Isang Habang Buhay), Off to Aurora (Sampung Hakbang), AuxJump (Balani), Maric Gavino (Atong Gugma), Aw'te Amakeh (Dulo), Toni Panagu (Breadcrumbs), Guava (28), VEEJ (Katawang Lupa), Wyanet Nazareno (Kahidlaw), Thonzkie (Batang Gapo), Si Mau Ug J (Ugma Mamatay Ra Ta), and Maria Perion (You Bring Out the Best in Me).

More than a showcase of original music, the concert became a celebration of stories, dreams, and lived experiences. Every songwriter shared a deeply personal piece of themselves through songs that reflected their unique voices and artistic journeys.

Reflecting on the performances, FILSCAP Vice President Tito Cayamanda shared how meaningful the experience was even for veteran songwriters. Having heard the finalists' songs from their original demos, he witnessed how each piece evolved into a fully realized performance on stage, highlighting the remarkable creativity and musical gifts of the emerging songwriters.

Adding to the excitement of the evening was a special guest performance by Angela Ken, whose appearance energized the packed venue and underscored the importance of supporting Filipino songwriting across generations.

The overwhelming response to this year's event reflects the growing appreciation for original Filipino music and the increasing recognition of the people behind the songs. With its record attendance, expanded production, and nationwide search for talent, Songwriters' Night Select has firmly established itself as the biggest celebration of Filipino songwriters in the country. It is a stage where emerging composers are not only discovered, but celebrated as the future of OPM.

As the night came to a close, FILSCAP announced that Songwriters' Night Select will return in 2027, promising an even bigger celebration of Filipino songwriting. The organization also revealed that its Songwriters' Night Open Mic Series will once again travel across the Philippines next year, visiting different cities and communities in search of the next generation of songwriters who will one day take the Music Museum stage.

Through these continuing initiatives, FILSCAP remains steadfast in its mission to discover, nurture, and champion Filipino music creators, ensuring that the future of OPM begins with the songwriters themselves.
