Heading into the contest with hopes of bolstering their semis bid, the Nationals went in with an inspired showing as they attempted to seize the lead early. However, they were dealt a bad surprise when Malaysia breached the Filipino booters’ defense after Pavithran Gunalan found the back of the net in the 16th minute.

In the next three minutes, the Philippines almost had an immediate opportunity for a counter and level the game but Javier Gayoso’s header from a pass by Kenji Nishioka didn't go through.

With its loss, the squad, mentored by Carles Cuadrat, kissed its semis bid goodbye after reaching the said round in the previous installment two years ago.

It was also a semifinalist in the 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2018 editions.

Malaysia, for its part, booked its semis spot and will face reigning champion Vietnam. The other Final Four pairing features Singapore and Thailand.

The Philippines concluded its campaign with one win – which came from its 4-1 demolition of Laos – and three defeats at fourth in Group B, just ahead of winless Lao squad (0-4). Myanmar (2-2) also got eliminated.

The Filipino booters will now turn their attention to the Aichi-Nagoya 20th Asian Games in Japan and this year’s FIFA ASEAN Cup hosted by Indonesia. Both tournaments are scheduled this September.
