After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.

Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

This Sunday’s readings speak to us of faith, trust, and the assurance of God’s presence, especially in the midst of storms and challenges of life. In silent contemplation and prayer, we decipher God’s abiding presence and Jesus’ accompaniment, reminding us that as long as we are committed to God’s plan, he will support us, and there should be no fear.

In the First Reading, the prophet Elijah is in hiding and feels defeated. He had a great triumph over the prophets of Baal, but now he is on the run, fearing the vengeance of the pagan Queen Jezebel. He takes refuge in a cave on Mount Horeb, waiting for God’s manifestation. God does not appear in the strong wind, in the earthquake, nor in the fire; he appears in a gentle whisper. Elijah’s experience teaches us that God often speaks to us in quiet moments. We live in a noisy world, fraught with distractions and anxieties. It is easy to miss God’s gentle whisper amid the chaos. We must cultivate times of silence and stillness in our lives to hear his voice and feel his presence.

In the Second Reading, St. Paul challenges us to look beyond our concerns and to reach out to others with the love of Christ. Speaking of his own ancestry as a Jew, Paul does not rely on his privileged position as belonging to the Israelite people to whom were given “the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the (Mosaic) law, the (Temple) worship, and the promises” (v 4). Rather, he glories in the salvific blessings that come in Christ Jesus, given to everyone who believes in Jesus, to both Jews and Gentiles alike. The Gospel presents the story of Jesus walking on the water.

After feeding 5,000 men, Jesus sends his disciples ahead in a boat while he goes up the mountain to pray. A storm arises, and the disciples are terrified. Jesus is always concerned for his disciples. He sees them even “from a distance.” He comes to them, walking on the sea. Peter, in his boldness, asks to walk to Jesus on the water. As long as he keeps his eyes on Jesus, he is able to walk on water, but when he notices the strong wind, fear takes hold of him, and he begins to sink.

Peter’s initial confidence and subsequent doubt mirror our own journey. At times, we start with great enthusiasm, but when challenges arise, our faith can waver. We are invited to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. When we focus on him, we can overcome any storm. But when we rely on our own strength, we will begin to sink.

Jesus’ immediate response to Peter’s cry for help is a reminder that he is always ready to save us, no matter how far we feel we have fallen. God’s word reminds us of his constant presence in our lives, especially in the midst of storms and challenges. God calls us to a deeper trust in him. When feeling alone and overwhelmed like Elijah, when caught in the storms of life like the disciples, or when about to sink like Peter, we should not forget to call on the Lord who comes to our assistance and makes haste to help us.
