The Marikina City Rescue 161 raised the first alarm at 8:44 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, after the river’s water level reached 15 meters.
It remained on the first alarm until Sunday morning before the water level reached 16 meters at 10:56 a.m., prompting authorities to raise it to the second alarm.
According to the city’s early warning system, residents in low-lying areas, especially those near the river, are advised to voluntarily evacuate to designated evacuation sites following the raising of the second alarm.
A third alarm will be raised once the river’s water level reaches 18 meters, prompting the implementation of forced evacuation protocols in all affected areas.
On Saturday night, Mayor Maan Teodoro ordered the opening of the city’s main evacuation centers to prepare for the immediate evacuation of residents if necessary.
Rescue boats, ambulances, and other emergency assets have also been deployed in various parts of the city to ensure a swift response in case of flooding.
The city government continues to monitor weather conditions, the water level of the Marikina River, and the situation in flood-prone areas. It also urged residents to remain alert and follow advisories from authorities.
The local government also suspended classes at all levels in both public and private schools on Monday, Aug. 10, due to the expected continued rains.
