At least 2,424 classrooms across several regions were damaged by the recent southwest monsoon or “habagat” rains, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Sunday, Aug. 9.
“Initial assessments from the DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) as of August 9 show a total of 2,424 damaged classrooms across affected regions, comprising 403 totally damaged, 505 with major damage, and 1,516 with minor damage,” the agency said in a statement.
According to the education department, its regional and schools division offices are currently validating data to identify priority areas for the immediate deployment of personnel who will help clean up affected schools.
DepEd said it is working with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to expand their joint response and speed up the recovery of public schools damaged by habagat.
The agencies will use their 2026 Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD)-Brigada Eskwela convergence as an immediate disaster cleanup mechanism to help restore affected classrooms.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara thanked DOLE, led by Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino, and the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES), headed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, for providing manpower and operational support for school readiness and emergency cleanup efforts.
The agency said that as of July 30, DOLE had funded the deployment of 168,517 temporary workers across 9,186 public schools nationwide under the TUPAD-Brigada Eskwela initiative.
The program provided P1.07 billion in financial assistance to support school opening operations, according to DepEd.
As such, Angara lauded DOLE for its commitment to provide emergency labor assistance to habagat-affected schools.
“Ngayong hinaharap natin ang pinsala ng habagat, muli tayong nagpapasalamat sa DOLE sa kanilang mabilis na pagtugon (As we deal with the damage caused by the habagat, we once again thank DOLE for its swift response),” he said.
“Sa tulong ng ating emergency labor augmentation, mas mabilis nating malilinis at maipapaayos ang ating mga silid-aralan upang maiwasan ang anumang abala sa pag-aaral ng ating mga kabataan (With the help of our emergency labor augmentation, we can clean and repair our classrooms more quickly to avoid any disruption to the education of our youth),” he went on.
