Six dead, 261000 affected due to cyclones, 'habagat' – OCD

Two more fatalities were recorded due to the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones “Maymay” and “Luis,” and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), raising the death toll to six, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The OCD said the two new deaths were logged in La Union in Ilocos Region (Region 1): one was a 35-year-old man who got electrocuted and another who drowned.
Previously, the OCD said two cooks died due to a landslide at a restaurant kitchen in Benguet while another two siblings were killed due to a rockslide in Rodriguez, Rizal.
Seven people were also reported injured in Benguet, five of them were due to a landslide in Baguio City, another person was injured in a vehicular accident in Kapangan town, while one person in La Trinidad was hurt in a landslide.
No missing persons were reported, according to the OCD.
The combined weather disturbances and the southwest monsoon have also affected 74,755 families or 261,048 people in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), Calabarzon (Region 4A), Mimaropa (Region 4B), Bicol (Region 5), and Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9).
Of this, there were 2,519 families or 7,580 individuals staying in 83 evacuation centers across the affected regions.
Meanwhile, a total of 120 houses were damaged, of which, 112 were partially damaged and eight were totally destroyed.
Infrastructure damage was estimated at P105.5 million while agricultural losses reached P3.53 million.
The government has so far provided P7.38 million worth of assistance to affected communities.
PCG conducts preemptive evacuation in Romblon
Meanwhile, 12 residents from three families were brought to designated evacuation centers by Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel early Saturday after floodwaters rose in Barangay Tulay, Odiongan, Romblon amid heavy rains.
The PCG said the evacuees included children and senior citizens, who were brought to safer grounds after water levels in the area increased.
The operation was led by the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Odiongan in coordination with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Philippine National Police Odiongan.
The PCG urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow advisories from local authorities.
