Marikina readies rescue boats, evacuation centers amid inclement weather

The Marikina City government has deployed rescue boats in identified low-lying and flood-prone areas in the city to ensure the safety of residents amid continued heavy rainfall brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).
On Saturday, Aug. 8, a total of 20 rescue boats have been deployed in the following flood-prone areas, with two boats assigned to each location:
• Calcite Twin River, Parang
• Bayabas
• Kingsway
• Bulelak, Malanday
• Homeowners Drive
• Mountain View, Sta. Elena
• St Mary Ave, Provident
• Tanong Gym
• Zenaida Homes, Sto. Niño
• IVC Safety Center
Aside from rescue boats, ambulances, and other emergency assets have also been deployed in various parts of the city to ensure a swift response in case of flooding.
It added that evacuation tents, food packs, and hygiene kits have also been prepositioned at the following major evacuation centers: Concepcion Integrated School, Malanday Elementary School, Nangka Elementary School, and H. Bautista Elementary School.
Also, central kitchens have been established and are operational at Manotoc Gym in Sto. Niño, designated to serve District I, and Nangka Elementary School, designated to serve District II.
Meanwhile, Mayor Maan Teodoro has ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in public and private schools on Sunday, Aug. 9, including NSTP and graduate schools, as well as all school-related activities, to ensure the safety of students and school personnel.
As of 7:14 p.m., the water level at the Marikina River was at 14.4 meters, still at the normal level. No flooding was reported in any area.
The local government said it continues to monitor the situation and urged residents to remain alert and follow advisories from authorities.
