Lacson calls Alex Eala 'newest, youngest' national hero after Canadian open win

Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Saturday hailed Filipina tennis star Alex Eala as the country’s “newest and youngest national hero” after she battled through a right-foot injury to defeat Caty McNally at the Canadian Open.

“Make way for our newest and youngest national hero - Alex Eala!” Lacson posted on X after Eala extended her winning streak with the victory.

Eala injured her right foot during her Round of 32 match against McNally in Toronto on Saturday, Manila time, but managed to overcome the setback and advance to the Round of 16.

The victory comes after Eala made history earlier this week by winning the Mubadala DC Open women’s singles title, defeating American Jessica Pegula in a rain-delayed final.

Eala became the first Filipino tennis player to win a WTA Tour singles title with the triumph.

Lacson earlier congratualated Eala for bringing honor and pride to the Philippines, and said he was among the many Filipinos who stayed up late to follow her historic match.

"Thank you Alex Eala for bringing honor and pride to our country, kahit pinuyat mo kaming mga Pinoy dito sa Pilipinas kagabi. Nakalimutan ko, may impeachment trial pala kami this morning (Thank you Alex Eala for bringing honor and pride to our country, even if you kept us Filipinos awake late into the night. I almost forgot there is an impeachment trial this morning)," the senator added the remark in jest, in a post on X.
