Man arrested for P5.3-M fuel scam in Cebu

CEBU CITY – A man was arrested for his alleged involvement in a multi-million fuel scam.

Agents of the National Bureau Investigation-Central Visayas (NBI-7) arrested the suspect in an entrapment operation inside a mall in Mandaue City, Cebu on Monday afternoon, Aug. 3. The suspect is a resident of Liloan, Cebu.

The NBI-7 said the suspect has at least two accomplices who remain at large.

The NBI-7 said a businessman accused the suspects of syndicated estafa. The businessman complained that he paid the suspects P5.3 million for 100,000 liters of diesel fuel.

The businessman said he was enticed to engage with the suspects who offered to sell diesel fuel for a discounted price of P53 per liter, a huge cut from P88 per liter. The payment was made last July 26.

Weeks passed but no fuel delivery was made. The complainant contacted the suspects but was told to pay an additional P575 million after oil prices increased.

The businessman asked the suspects if he could only pay P100,000. The suspects agreed. However, the fuel was still not delivered, prompting the businessman to seek help from the NBI-7.

The suspect was arrested in a coffee shop in a mall in Mandaue where he agreed to meet the complainant for the additional payment.
