VP Sara graces Kadayawan Festival thanksgiving Mass

DAVAO CITY – Vice President Sara Duterte joined people in the Thanksgiving Mass for the 2026 Kadayawan Festival on Thursday, Aug. 6, and urged them to give thanks for their blessings and expressed hope that former President Rodrigo Duterte would join future celebrations.
Vice President Duterte said the former Chief Executive misses celebrating Kadayawan with the people.
“Of course, he misses our fellow Davaoeños and celebrating Kadayawan with them. There are milestones we cannot always attend. Hopefully, next year or in the coming years, he will be able to join our Kadayawan celebration," Vice President Duterte said.
The Vice President, who visited him at the International Criminal Court detention facility in The Hague, the Netherlands recently, said he remains cheerful despite minor health concerns.
"He (former President Duterte) is very joyful whenever I visit him. He has not lost his sense of humor. There are some minor health issues, but thankfully, these are being addressed by the detention facility," she said.
The Mass formally opened the Kadayawan Festival, which was presided over by Archbishop Romulo G. Valles and attended by local government officials, Office of the Vice President-Southern Mindanao Satellite Office personnel, and the people.
The Vice President said she was pleased to celebrate the start of what she described as the country's "King of Festivals" with fellow Davaoeños and encouraged people to celebrate with joy and give thanks for the blessings they have received.
"Happy Kadayawan Festival," Duterte said, adding, "Let us love the Philippines – for God, for the nation, and for every Filipino family."
This year's Kadayawan Festival, which will have its grand opening at Magsaysay Park on Friday afternoon, Aug. 7, features its biggest program to date, with the Davao City government organizing 26 official activities, up from 16 last year, and targeting 250,000 tourist arrivals.
City Tourism Operations Office officer-in-charge Willenito Tormis Jr. said the city allocated more than P68 million for this year's celebration, citing the expanded lineup of activities and increased support for Davao City's 11 ethnolinguistic communities.
Among the festival highlights is the first-ever staging of the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan (street dancing) grand showdown at the Davao City Coastal Road-Tulip Drive and the Pamulak sa Kadayawan (Floral Float Parade) on Aug. 16.
While the street parade will continue on its traditional route from Roxas Ave. to San Pedro Square, event organizer Harold Quibete said the final performances and awarding ceremony will be held at the new venue to accommodate more spectators.
The city increased cash prizes for the festival competitions, with the Open Category champion set to receive P1.5 million, the School-Based Category winner P1.2 million, and the Pamulak sa Kadayawan grand champion taking home a record P1 million.
