Two Caloocan cops nabbed for gunrunning

Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), vowed to dismiss from the service two police sergeants who were caught engaged in gun-running activities in a buy-bust in Caloocan City.

The two policemen are both assigned to the Caloocan City and are currently detained pending the filing of criminal and administrative charges against them for violation of Sections 28 and 29 of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

“I will dismiss these police officers. This is hard to do to fellow police officers but I am mandated to protect the badge of the PNP,” said Nartatez.

The operation was carried out at around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, in Barangay 5 based on the confirmed intelligence reports that the two policemen are engaged in illegal sale of firearms.

The operation was arranged by tapping a poseur-buyer. The arrest was announced as soon as the two policemen received the marked money.

Seized from them were two PNP-issued firearms: a Pietro Beretta Model 92 DS 9mm pistol with one magazine loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition, and a Taurus 9mm pistol with two magazines loaded with a total of 35 rounds.

Police also seized a .38-caliber revolver loaded with two rounds, a 12-gauge shotgun with four shotgun shells, the marked buy-bust money consisting of one genuine P500 bill and two boodle P1,000 bills, two mobile phones, and two motorcycles.
