LTO warns public utility vehicles vs overloading

Agency issues reminder following viral video

ILOILO CITY – The Land Transportation Office-6 warned Public Utility Vehicles in Western Visayas against overloading following the viral video of a jampacked jeepney bound to Lambunao, Iloilo from this city with passengers sitting on the roof.
LTO-6 Director Gaudioso P. Geduspan II said they understand the struggle of commuters who need to travel back home but transport cooperatives are liable for the safety of passengers, drivers, or conductors.
“As common carriers, they are required to exercise extraordinary diligence in transporting passengers, a duty that exists whether law enforcers are present,” Geduspan said in a statement.
Geduspan called on all transportation cooperatives in Western Visayas to comply with the Fleet Management System under the Public Transport Modernization Program.
Overloaded passenger jeepneys and mini-buses have figured in accidents and LTO-6 wants to avoid any major road mishaps in the region.
Geduspan lauded the people for helping LTO-6 catch violators with their photos and videos.
LTO-6 only has 20 regular law enforcers and several deputized personnel in Western Visayas.
