The Philippine national men’s football team's dream of advancing to the semis suffered a big blow after absorbing a heartbreaking 0-1 loss to Thailand in the 2026 ASEAN Championship (Hyundai Cup) at the New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac on a rainy Tuesday, Aug. 4.
The Nationals, who earlier scored a 4-1 triumph over Laos, showed promise by displaying a solid defensive effort for the majority of the match.
However, an 84th minute goal by Waris Choolthong proved fatal for the home team, with the Philippines now in danger of missing a semis berth with its win-draw-loss record of 1-0-2 for fourth place.
Thailand remains at the top with a perfect 3-0 slate, with Malaysia (2-0-1) and Myanmar (2-0-1) trailing behind.
Only the top two teams will advance to the semis.
Despite its crucial defeat, the Philippines look to regroup and bolster its shot for the podium when it eyes a convincing win against host Malaysia this Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium.
Also battling on the same day are seven-time champion Thailand and Myanmar at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.
