PCG reports no tsunami threat, damage after strong Mindanao quake

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Wednesday, Aug. 5, that no tsunami warning has been issued and no damage has been reported to its facilities in southeastern Mindanao following a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that jolted parts of Mindanao at noon.
In a statement, the PCG said initial assessments by the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) showed that all stations and sub-stations within its area of responsibility remained intact.
“Initial reports from the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) indicate that all stations and sub-stations within its area of responsibility remain intact, with no reported damage,” the Coast Guard said.
“As of press time, the CGDSEM also reported that no tsunami warning has been issued,” it added.
The PCG noted that an assessment of all of its facilities was ongoing to ensure the safety and operational readiness of personnel and assets.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) earlier said a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Sarangani, Davao Occidental at 12:13 p.m.
It later revised the strength of the shaking to magnitude 6.4.
The epicenter of the quake was located 29 kilometers southwest of Sarangani at a depth of 13 kilometers.
The strongest shaking, classified at Intensity V, was recorded in Glan, Sarangani while Intensity IV, III, and II were felt in parts of Sarangani, South Cotabato, General Santos City, and Koronadal City.
Meanwhile, the PCG said it remains on alert to assist affected communities if needed.
“The PCG continues to coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management authorities and remains ready to support response operations,” the agency said.
