Meralco bets on improved smart metering to boost grid resilience

Manuel V. Pangilinan-led power distribution giant Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is stepping up its grid modernization strategy through continued investments in enhanced smart metering technologies aimed at strengthening its distribution network and reducing electricity losses.

In a statement on Wednesday, Aug. 5, Meralco highlighted the evolution of its Elevated Metering Center (EMC) into Elevated Metering Transformation (EMX), a key component of its ongoing drive to deploy smarter and more secure metering infrastructure across its service area.

Integrated into Meralco’s broader Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) framework, the upgraded EMX platform allows the utility to perform remote meter reading, service disconnections, and reconnections while providing greater physical protection for its metering facilities.

Beyond operational convenience, the company said EMX expands its visibility across the distribution network. This enables the early detection of potential system irregularities and power pilferage while significantly streamlining field operations.

For Meralco, strengthening the integrity of its metering system is critical to minimizing non-technical losses—such as illegal connections and meter tampering—while maintaining reliable service for its customers.

The EMX rollout forms part of Meralco’s multifaceted grid modernization program.

By deploying these smart technologies alongside other digital grid systems, the utility aims to build a more resilient and efficient network capable of meeting the growing energy needs of its more than eight million customers across Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Earlier this year, Meralco said it plans to deploy 72,000 smart meters within the year, in partnership with Aclara Meters Philippines Inc., allowing the distributor to conduct meter readings and process service connections and disconnections remotely. - Gabriell Christel Galang
