'Sheer grit': Sandro Marcos congratulates Alex Eala on DC Open title win

House Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos hailed Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala for making Filipinos proud following her historic 2026 Mubadala DC Open title victory.
Marcos is one of the authors of House Resolution (HR) No. 1286, which the House of Representatives adopted during plenary session on Tuesday night, Aug. 4.
The measure expressed the sense of the 300-plus strong chamber in congratulating Eala winning her first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles championship in the United States (US).
“She has brought immense pride for her great accomplishment, not only personally for herself but for all her compatriots and for the entire country,” Marcos said of the 21-year-old.
"We are proud of her, the whole nation is proud of her,” the presidential son added.
Marcos noted that Eala’s victories in Washington DC and in previous tournaments “show the world the Filipinos’ resilience, courage and perseverance".
He noted that the tennis sensation rose from the ranks and climbed to the tennis rankings “through sheer grit".
House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III earlier greeted Eala for her triumph. 
"Princess Alex" won the DC Open by routinely beating higher-ranked players. She defeated world no. 3 and tournament top seed Jessica Pegula in the finals.
The victory made her the first Filipino to break into the Top 20 of the WTA singles rankings.
