The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, Aug. 4, said it is not discounting the possibility of a typhoon internationally named “Dolphin” entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the next few days.

PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said Dolphin was located 2,330 kilometers east-northeast of Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.

It was moving westward at 25 kph.

Torres said Dolphin is expected to remain near the northern boundary of PAR if it enters the PAR.

However, she said the typhoon is unlikely to make landfall, but it may enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”

Should “Dolphin” enter PAR, it will be assigned the local name “Maymay.”

Meanwhile, two low pressure areas (LPAs) are expected to continue to bring rain over parts of Luzon.

Torres said one LPA, formerly Tropical Depression Luis, was located in the vicinity of Baggao, Cagayan, while another was over the coastal waters of Bacnotan, La Union.

Both LPAs have a low chance of developing into tropical depressions within the next 24 hours.

However, they are expected to bring rains over Northern and Central Luzon.

The southwest monsoon, meanwhile, will bring rains over Metro Manila, parts of Southern Luzon, and the westernmost portions of the Visayas.

PAGASA forecast moderate to heavy rainfall, or 50 to 100 millimeters, on Wednesday, Aug. 5, over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, La Union, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Benguet, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro.

On Thursday, Aug. 6, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique.
