Instituto Cervantes hosts talk on the myths of the Black Legend

On August 6, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., Instituto Cervantes in Manila will present the lecture «¿Por qué pervive la Leyenda Negra? Tres mitos» (Why does the Black Legend still exist? Three myths), to be delivered in Spanish by renowned anthropologist Fernando Zialcita.
This talk forms part of the “Charlas de la Academia” series organized by the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española, an institution founded in 1924 dedicated to promoting the Spanish language in the Philippines. The series highlights Spain’s cultural and historical legacy in the country and reflects the Academia’s ongoing initiatives to foster appreciation of this heritage.
Professor Zialcita’s lecture will examine three enduring myths surrounding Spain’s history in the Philippines, offering fresh insights into misconceptions that continue to shape public perception.
A distinguished scholar, Fernando Zialcita is a member of the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española and Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Ateneo de Manila University. His academic work has focused extensively on Filipino identity and the preservation of the nation’s architectural and cultural heritage.
