Romeo Jalosjos, TV producer behind 'Eat Bulaga!' and TAPE Inc., dies at 85

Former television producer Romeo "Nonong" Garcia Jalosjos, one of the key figures behind the success of the long-running noontime program "Eat Bulaga!," has died. He was 85.

His son, Seth Frederick "Bullet" Jalosjos, announced the news in a statement posted on social media on Sunday, Aug. 2.

"It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our beloved father, Romeo 'Nonong' Garcia Jalosjos," Bullet wrote.

The family has not disclosed the cause of death.

According to the announcement, Jalosjos' wake will be held at The Heritage Park in Taguig City from Aug. 3 to Aug. 5 before his remains are brought to Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte, where funeral services will continue from Aug. 6 to Aug. 12.

In his tribute, Bullet remembered his father as a media pioneer, visionary, and devoted family man whose work left a lasting mark on both the television industry and public service.

"While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life lived with extraordinary purpose," he said, adding that his father's legacy would live on through the people he inspired and the communities he helped build.

Jalosjos was best known in the entertainment industry as one of the founders of Television and Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE Inc.), which he established with veteran producer Tony Tuviera in 1981.

Under TAPE, the company produced "Eat Bulaga!" for more than four decades, helping turn it into the country's longest-running noontime variety show and one of Philippine television's most enduring entertainment brands.

Long before TAPE was formed, Jalosjos worked as a television producer for ABC and ABS-CBN, making him one of the industry's early behind-the-scenes figures before martial law was declared in 1972.

Beyond television, Jalosjos also ventured into politics, serving as congressman for Zamboanga del Norte. His political career, however, ended after his conviction in a high-profile criminal case that was later affirmed by the Supreme Court.

He also made headlines over the years for his ties to the entertainment industry, including his relationship with the late actress Nida Blanca before marrying former singer Lourna Pal.

Jalosjos is survived by his family, who thanked the public for their prayers, condolences, and support as they mourn his passing.
