Mayor Isko orders Meralco to fix 12,000 unsafe poles across Manila

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has ordered Meralco to clear and replace more than 12,000 damaged and leaning electric poles across the city, flagged through government mapping that assessed over 33,000 posts.

City data showed more than 6,000 poles were damaged while another 6,000 were leaning, prompting Domagoso to push for immediate action with no area prioritized over another.

During a consultative meeting on “systems loss” charges, the mayor said all unserviceable poles identified through the city’s ArcGIS mapping must be addressed.

Meralco, in response, committed to speed up the clearing of idle posts and submit a timeline for completion.

“There may be some shortcomings in the past, but we try to correct it today and in the future. You have a friend in the City,” Domagoso said.

The mayor also assured protection for Meralco crews conducting anti-pilferage operations, tapping the Manila Police District.

“Itong mga ito ay nagtatrabaho lang (These people are just doing their jobs), they should not be put in harm’s way,” he said.

Meralco officials, meanwhile, revealed that some barangay officials allegedly maintain illegal power connections and have obstructed enforcement operations.

The city government said it will coordinate with concerned barangays to resolve access and right-of-way issues, and ordered the creation of a real-time coordination channel among the city, police, and Meralco to speed up field operations.
