LTFRB, transport groups meet to discuss fare hike petitions

Leaders of various transport groups will meet with officials of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Monday morning, August 3, to discuss the petition for fare increase.
LTGFRB chairman Vigor D. Mendoza II said they also expect representatives from various groups and stakeholders to join on the discussion aimed at coming up with the solution on rising operational costs of the public utility vehicles (PUVs) amid the series of big-time oil price hikes.
“The goal has always been to come up with the best measures that are acceptable not only to the PUV community but also to all the concerned sectors, particularly the commuters because of the continuous challenge that we face as a result of the situation in the Middle East,” said Mendoza.
“This is also proof of the sensitivity of the national government to the concerns of those in the PUV sector which we deem as valid and logical,” he added.
The hearing covers almost all modes of public land transportation operating in the country like public utility jeepneys that will be represented by transport groups Piston and Manibela.
Also expected to join are representatives from the UV Express frpm Metro Comet Transport Service Cooperative, 997 Sandigan Transport Cooperative and UV Express National Alliance of the Philippines.
Metro Comet Transport Service Cooperative will also represent the air conditioned taxi with Light of Glory Transport Service, Inc. while the motorcycle taxi will be represented by United Transportation Coalition of the Philippines
The transport groups have pending fare hike petitions before the LTFRB,--all filed between March to July this year.
“The purpose of the hearing is to receive evidence, comments, and the respective positions of all interested parties regarding the pending petition,” said Mendoza.
“All comments and objections to the fare hike adjustments will be entertained as part of the due process and hearing protocol,” he added.
Mendoza encouraged those who wish to do so to submit written position papers and supporting documents in accordance with the existing rules, “ We in the LTFRB assure that we will always pursue the path of fairness and impartiality to come up with the best solution that is acceptable to all parties concerned.”
in March this year, the LTFRB approved fare increase to all modes of transportation due to series of oil price hikes as a result of the Middle East conflict. 
President Marcos deferred the fare hike implementation and instead pushed for cash subsidy and fuel discount to protect the public from additional transport expenses.
Department of Transportation Secretary Giovanni Z. Lopez earlier ordered the LTFRB to review and compute the appropriate fare adjustment after some transport groups complained the series of oil price hikes anew. 
Other major transport groups are asking for the implementation of the fare increase that were deferred in March.
