For those who grew up watching the news on television, he was the familiar chinito reporter delivering stories for GMA News under the name Julius Segovia. For many of his students, however, he is simply Sir Julius, the mentor who generously shares lessons from the newsroom with aspiring journalists eager to enter one of the country's most demanding professions.
Now, his more than two decades of experience in Philippine media are finding a new audience beyond the classroom. Julius has turned years of reporting, teaching, and mentoring into “Eere Tayo! A Practical Workbook for Journalism, Broadcasting and Digital Media,” a self-published learning resource set for release this September.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, Julius said the idea for the workbook grew from years of training campus journalists and school paper advisers in journalism competitions across the country.
"Through the years, I noticed the limited availability of reference materials suited for Filipino students and the Philippine media setting," he said. "This inspired me to create a workbook that is more relatable, practical, conversational, and easy to understand for both students and teachers."
Having spent more than 20 years in the media industry and over a decade in academia, he wanted to go beyond teaching theories and technical concepts. Instead, he packed the workbook with newsroom experiences, industry insights, and lessons drawn from both his successes and mistakes in the field.
The workbook aims to bridge classroom instruction with real newsroom practice through practical exercises, newsroom simulations, reflection activities, and QR codes that link readers to actual news reports and broadcasting demonstrations. Students can also sharpen skills in reporting, scriptwriting, anchoring, interviewing, and storytelling through structured activities designed for classroom or independent learning.

For him, learning directly from media practitioners gives students an advantage that textbooks alone cannot provide.
"As a campus journalist, learning from a media practitioner is more than just something to be proud of. It is an opportunity to gain insights grounded in real-world experience," he said. "The lessons shared by someone who has worked in the industry go beyond theories found in books. They are practical, relevant, and tested in actual newsroom situations."
Beyond technical skills, the workbook also includes insights and messages from fellow media practitioners, newsroom professionals, mentors, and industry colleagues to give readers a broader perspective on the profession.
He hopes the book will become more than just another classroom reference.
"I wanted this workbook to become an experiential learning material, one that would help students become familiar with the realities, challenges, pressures, and fast-paced environment of the real world of media and broadcasting," he said.
Julius also considers the project part of his legacy as an educator and journalist, hoping it will continue guiding future generations of storytellers.
"So, to every aspiring storyteller and communicator reading this workbook, welcome to the world of broadcasting. Hang on. The story is just getting started."
