Following complaints from a student over noise and sanitation at Fusion Alley, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso summoned vendors and ordered a full cleanup of the popular food strip along Delos Reyes Street.
A meeting was held on Friday, July 31, at Manila City Hall, where Domagoso personally addressed the vendors and reiterated city government policies on sanitation, proper waste disposal, and compliance with existing ordinances. He warned that repeated violations could lead to penalties, including possible closure of stalls.
“Matapos nating marinig ang reklamo ng isang estudyante, agad po nating ipinatawag ang mga manininda sa Fusion Alley sa Sampaloc (After hearing the complaint of a student, we immediately called the Fusion Alley vendors in Sampaloc),” Domagoso said.
The mayor said the city is not ignoring concerns from residents and students living near the area.
“Hindi po natin binabalewala ang reklamo ng iilan. Nakisuyo po tayo sa mga manininda na panatilihing malinis ang lugar at iwasan ang sobrang ingay upang hindi makaperwisyo sa mga nakatira sa paligid (We are not disregarding the complaints of a few. We asked the vendors to keep the area clean and avoid excessive noise so they will not disturb nearby residents),” he said.
As part of the cleanup, tents were temporarily removed to allow a more thorough flushing and cleaning of the area.
Domagoso warned that vendors who fail to maintain cleanliness could face closure.
“Malinaw ang aking bilin: kapag nakita kong marumi ang paligid ay kaagad ko silang ipapasara (My instruction is clear: if I see that the surroundings are dirty, I will immediately have them closed),” he said.
He also directed the Department of Public Services (DEPS) to collect garbage from the area earlier.
“Hindi lang po gobyerno ang may responsibilidad. Kailangan din ng kusang disiplina at pakikiisa ng bawat manininda (The government is not the only one responsible. Each vendor must also show discipline and cooperation),” Domagoso said.
The mayor said the city’s goal is to maintain livelihood opportunities while ensuring cleanliness and order.
