Las Piñas, Meralco eye wider use of renewable energy

The Las Piñas City government and the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) are strengthening their partnership to expand the use of renewable energy and provide residents with cleaner, more affordable electricity.
Meralco officials paid a courtesy call on Mayor April Aguilar last Friday, July 31, at the Las Piñas City Hall, where they discussed initiatives to accelerate renewable energy adoption in the city.
Among the proposals were measures to fast-track the installation of solar energy systems, streamline the processing of residential net metering applications, and promote programs that could lower electricity costs and reduce the carbon footprint of Las Piñeros.
City officials highlighted Las Piñas’ strong performance in renewable energy adoption.
A recent report shows the city ranks third nationwide in commissioned residential net metering (NM) installations, with 1,170 residential connections and a total installed capacity of 7.7 megawatt peak (MWp).
Net metering allows homeowners with solar photovoltaic systems to export excess electricity to the distribution grid, offsetting their consumption and reducing monthly bills.
Aguilar said the city government remains committed to working with stakeholders to implement programs that promote energy efficiency, sustainability, and affordable power services for residents.
She added that the partnership with Meralco supports the city’s continuing efforts to encourage renewable energy use while building a cleaner, more resilient, and environmentally sustainable Las Piñas.
